Making the decision to become a professionally recognised instructor is not one to be taken lightly, requiring, as it does, commitment to your practical knowledge and teaching skills. This commitment applies not only to gaining a recognised qualification, but to the ongoing and continued personal & professional development (CPPD). CPPD is a requirement to maintain and update the knowledge and skills required for effective coaching and instruction in all areas of game angling and fly fishing.

GAIA welcomes anyone who wishes to begin the process of becoming a game angling/fly fishing instructor/coach by offering a proven and effective pathway to achieve your goals.

Initially it is essential that those wishing to become instructors undergo mentoring by one of the many experienced mentors available through GAIA. The purpose of this is to ensure that there is no mis-understanding of what is required and to give a clear guide to what additional skills, knowledge, or development is required. The mentors are able to provide advice on how additional skills or knowledge can be achieved.

Qualifications are available in the following disciplines:

  • Single Handed fly rod for trout, grayling and seatrout
  • Double Handed fly rod for salmon and seatrout
  • Fly Dressing

An applicant may apply to undertake assessment in any number of these disciplines.

The qualifications currently administered by GAIA include:

  • Game Angling Instructors Certificate (GAIC)
  • Advanced Professional Game Angling Instructors Certificate (APGAI)

Application for APGAI requires the applicant having the equivalent GAIC qualification for a period of at least one year.
